Beware the PABX...

If you're responsible for or even use a PABX then beware. We all know that telephony can be an expensive business this website has a number of cautionary tales with some hints and tips on how they might be avoided e.g Fraud a Cautionary Tale

We've recently encountered 2 more that we hadn't previously come across.

Automated Banking

If you use telephone banking and they have an automated service you may be asked to key in your account number, sort code and a PIN number, these details may well find themselves in the output from the PABX and available to another party - potentially very costly. We recently found these details available to our call logger. Don't do your banking at work if you have a switchboard unless you really have to.

Operator Calls

One of our clients runs serviced offices and uses our call logger to charge his clients (we have a great solution for serviced offices contact us!). The clients are by their nature keener than most to avoid call charges. A recent scam that has proved costly is for the client to phone International Directory Enquiries obtain a number and then ask the operator to connect them. The international number is never keyed and therefore cannot be recorded. The call looks like a very long directory enquiries call. The directory enquiries operator records the call and the international call, charged at a premium, appears in the carriers bill. If you've set International Directory Enquiry rates to low relative to the cost of International Calls you could be vulnerable. Another means of avoiding this trap is to block calls to the International Enquiries Numbers point them to our International Directory Enquiries pages instead!
